Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), delivered a powerful and emotional speech at the party’s 3rd National People’s Assembly (NPA) on December 13, 2024. Malema’s address was a pivotal moment for the party, as it reflected on its achievements and challenges while charting its path forward.

Malema began his speech by paying tribute to his late grandmother, who he described as the “guiding engine” behind his political journey. He credited her wisdom and courage for keeping him grounded during trying times. Malema also expressed his gratitude to his wife and family for their unwavering support, highlighting the sacrifices they have made due to his activism.

The EFF leader reaffirmed the party’s commitment to Marxist-Leninist principles, which underpin its policies of opposing capitalism and promoting a socialist agenda. Malema argued that the authority criticised by detractors is inherent in the very system that perpetuates inequality and exploitation.

Malema acknowledged the EFF’s challenges, including its first electoral decline during the May 2024 general elections. He attributed the party’s setbacks to internal sabotage and infiltration, which he vowed to address decisively.

The EFF leader called on party members to remain disciplined and united, stressing that loyalty and discipline are crucial for sustaining the party’s revolutionary mission. Malema’s speech also touched on a range of domestic and international issues, including the Palestinian struggle against Israel and Russia’s resistance to NATO-backed aggression in Ukraine.

The NPA saw over 2,500 delegates convene to elect the EFF’s leadership for the next five years. Malema is widely expected to retain his position as EFF President for a third term. The assembly also featured delegations from sister organisations across Africa, reflecting the EFF’s commitment to Pan-Africanism.
