The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the suspension of its CEO, Busisiwe Memela Khambule, on full pay pending the investigation inyo her appointment.
According to a media statement shared by SASSA on their social media platforms, the decision to suspend Khambule was prompted by the need to conduct investigation without hindrance or interference given her position.
The statement read: “Whilst we deal with a lot of challenges facing SASSA, we want to take decisive decisions that will ensure that our work is transparent, effective and efficient and we have an organization that will assist in fighting hunger and poverty in our country,” said Minister Tolashe.
While the details of the investigation are not yet clear, SASSA has assured the public that the agency’s operations will continue uninterrupted, with a designated acting CEO taking over Khambule’s responsibilities.
The regional Executive manager for Gauteng, Mr Themba Matlou has since been appointed the Acting CEO until the matter is concluded.
The suspension of Khambule has sparked widespread interest, with many calling for transparency and accountability within the agency.
