The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Thapelo Amad resigned yesterday. Amad resigned on the eve of a vote of no confidence that was scheduled to take place today.

Amad replaced ousted Mayor Mpho Phalatse who belonged to the Democratic Alliance.

The 42 year old was elected Mayor after receiving 138 votes from Councillors. Phalatse received 81 votes.

When he was elected he promised to prioritise service delivery, root out corruption, patch potholes and stabilise the City of Johannesburg’s finances.
