South African musician, DJ, model and poet, Sio (Siobhan Lulama King, 31), has been featured on a billboard at Time Square as part of the Spotify Equal artist program.
The program gives female and African artists an opportunity to improve their skills and careers.
Sio was thrilled with her inclusion in the program and told the Sowetan Magazine that the inclusion in the program has exposed her to different audiences. She says Americans now make up the majority of people streaming her music.
After she was featured by Spotify, Sio said South Africans also flocked and are now streaming more of her music.
Projects
2016 – She wrote the lyrics to 1000 memories with Julian Gomes
2021 – Sio was featured in Thebe’s ready to wear collection.
2022 – Sio was the lead actress in Magugu’s film, Midnight cutters at the Paris Fashion week.
2022 – Sio is currently working on her third album.
Sio has written two poetry books and is well known as a storyteller ( Sio Black Widow).
Family
Sio is an only child and was brought up by a single mother. She told the magazine that her mother took care 10 family members with her salary and was always working. This made Sio a very independent person from a young age.
Sio’s mother is a coloured woman while her father is a Zulu man from Emnambithi.
