Police watchdog IPID is investigating a case of assult against an Eastern Cape police officer who is accused of dragging DA Federal Council Chair Helen Zille out of the Fernwood Primary school voting station in Bethelsdorp this Monday.

An internal police report indicated that Zille had opened a case of assult against the police officer after the incident. According to Zille, she walked down the line asking people to wait since the queues were long.

She revealed that when she got to the front of the queue, the ANC observers started accusing her of canvassing.

She added that an officer instructed her to leave the premises and threatened to arrest her and put her in the back of a police van.

Zille claimed that she was frog marched out of the station. She accused the police officer of twisting her arm and pushing her. The phone which a colleague used to film the incident was taken forcibly taken away by the officer.
